Darren Criss is Really Expensive! How Much Did Broadway Have to Pay to Get Him?
Wow, so apparently Broadway producers
really wanted
Darren Criss (
Blaine) for
How to Succeed Without Really Trying … and they were willing to fork over A LOT of money to get him away from Glee for a few weeks.
According to a January 2 article in
The New York Times, the producers of How to Succeed are so confident that Darren is destined to be a Broadway star that they “are betting on him to an unusual extent.”
The article states, [
HTS producers] "are spending tens of thousands of dollars to rehearse and pay Mr. Criss for just three weeks of performances this month, before he returns to “Glee,” in hopes of molding him into a theater star they might build a Broadway musical around someday."
Tens of thousands of dollars — and for only three weeks? That certainly isn’t pocket change! (Any math whizzes want to figure out how much he’s costing them an hour?) That said,
Playbill is reporting that the show brought in $1,910,224 for just nine performances last week at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre — a record-breaking amount for
the venue. So it doesn't sound like they're hurting
too badly.
Also, the idea of some building an ENTIRE Broadway musical around Darren someday? Um
YES, please!!! Where do we buy tickets to
that show? We’ll take fifty.
