Glee Star Darren Criss to Host the 13th Annual Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards



Glee star and Broadway alum Darren Criss will serve as the host of the 13th Annual Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards. The ceremony will take place on May 13 at the Allen Room in Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Criss is also a nominee at this year's event (for Favorite Replacement for his turn in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying). A complete list of presenters will be announced soon.

In an invitation-only ceremony, the Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards will feature the presentation of awards in traditional categories such as Favorite New Musical and Favorite New Play, in addtion to categories unique to the event such as Favorite Diva Performance, Favorite Breakthrough Performance and Favorite Broadway Tour. All awards are decided solely by the voting of theater fans on Broadway.com. To vote for your favorites, click here.

Criss currently stars as Blaine Anderson on TV's hit series Glee. He made his Broadway debut earlier this year as J. Pierrepont Finch in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. The actor recently finished filming the comedy Imogen opposite Kristen Wiig, Annette Bening and Matt Dillon. His other screen credits include Eastwick and Cold Case. Criss is a founding member of the production company StarKid, creators of the hit YouTube videos A Very Potter Musical and A Very Potter Sequel, which starred Criss as Harry Potter. In addition to the Potter musicals, Criss composed the music for the original musical Starship. He will join StarKid for select dates on their upcoming summer tour.

Broadway’s best arrived at the 2012 Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards on May 13 ready to celebrate, and the hour-long show was filled with laughs, music and thank-yous to fans, set against stunning views of Central Park from the Allen Room at the Time-Warner Center. Broadway.com will broadcast the ceremony later this week, but for now, here are five memorable moments from an unforgettable evening.



Host With the Most: Glee star and Broadway alum Darren Criss lived up to expectations as a charming, low-key host with a naughty side. In two original musical numbers, the Favorite Replacement winner showed off his musicianship on the guitar (opening the show by lampooning his three-week-long stint in How to Succeed) and grand piano (poking gentle fun at the Favorite Actress nominees). He even worked in a joke about washing Andrew Keenan-Bolger’s underwear at the University of Michigan!

Speech! Speech! Darren Criss Thanks Fans After Winning 2012 Broadway.com Audience Choice Award


One of the highlights of Darren Criss’ appearance at the 2012 Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards was his charming acceptance speech after winning the award for Best Replacement. In the midst of hosting the ceremony, Criss picked up a prize for his limited engagement as J. Pierrepont Finch in the Broadway revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. “I’m glad to see Broadway.com kept their end of the bargain, that’s good. Very reliable people, I take back everything I ever said about them. Well, gee thanks. Schucks, this is cool! I would be remiss not to thank Mr. Daniel Radcliffe for giving me shoes to replace in the first place ,and to Craig [Zadan] and Neil [Meron] over there, who were crazy to let that kid from Glee do a show for three weeks, which is absolutely unheard of, and a producer’s nightmare, but you did it and let me do it and we ended up doing pretty ok, so thank you for that opportunity.

“I’m a huge, huge fan and I’m always on Broadway.com a lot looking up new shows. And I’ve always been a theater fan and a person that votes for things and blogs and gets really nerdy about the whole process. People are always asking me, ‘When is the next time you’re going to be on Broadway?’ and I say ‘Well, whenever they let me.’ So between the fan support and my love of Broadway, I hope it’s sometime very soon. And in the meantime, maybe one of the fans at home will get one of these for replacing me. Break a leg!”
